Aside from death- heat stress causes a rise in body temperature and heart rate, loss of concentration and difficulty in focusing on a task, irritability and/or sickness, little or no desire to drink anything, fainting – and then of course death! Heat is nothing to fool around with as it takes many lives each year.

If someone obviously has one or more of these symptoms it’s possibly heat stroke: call for help and then get the person to a shady or cool place. If you can soak the victim’s clothing with cool water and fan him or her vigorously to increase cooling.

Heat exhaustion results from not drinking enough replacement fluids. It can cause weakness, fatigue, giddiness, nausea, or headache. The skin is clammy and moist while body temperaature is slightly elevated. Get the victim to a cool place and let him or her rest and have a drink of water or an electrolyte solution such as Gatorade. That restores potassium and salt. In severe cases the victim may vomit or pass out. Call for help – don’t be afraid it’s “not serious enough”. It could be a matter of life!

Heat cramps are painful spasms of the muscles and are caused by loss of salt in the body. Get the victim to drink Gtorade or anything that is an electrolyte solution. Seek medical attention in the case of severe cramping.

Heat can cause you to faint! Don’t know if you knew it or not, but when I had a severe muscle spasm in my back (cause unknown) – I fainted – and I broke my leg! Be careful and prevent any heat related problems BEFORE they happen. If someone faints try to get the victim on they back. When consciousness is regained the victim should recover after a brief period of walking around slowly.

A heat rash can be extensive and can be complicated by infection. Heat rash can be so uncomfortable that sleep is disrupted. It can even impede performance of any task and can result in a temporary total disability. If someone has heat rash, place the victim in a cool place and allow the skin to dry.

BE SURE TO WEAR SUNSCREEN. YOU NEED TO PROTECT YOUR BODY, THE BODIES OF YOUR KIDS, YOUR GRANDMA’S FRAGILE BODY. EVEN IF ONLY IN THE SUN FOR A BRIEF PERIOD OF TIME PLEASE PROTECT YOURSELF. ALWAYS TRY TO TAKE WATER (IN A SMALL ICE CHEST IT CAN STAY COOL).

BE SAFE. HAVE FUN AND GOD BLESS!

Many deaths occur in heat waves. More people succumb to heat than you may realize. More than all other weather related problems.
Make sure you wear sunscreen (will keep your skin healthy and protect from skin cancer – less wrinkles too)!

Keep ool potable water with you at all times. Those working in the heat need to drink 3-4 glasses of water per hour. Not ice water as that can be a negative shock to the body – and not tons of water – just the amount I mentioned above. Find shade if you feel light-heated or ill. The direct sun can add as much as 15 degrees to the heat index.

Don’t forget, if you haven’t been out working in the heat for a while, due to illness or injury, your body needs to adjust to it again. It will honestly take a period of 4-10 days to work up to working full time in the sun again. When you do work in the heat take frequent rest breaks as this reduces the internal heat and provides time for the body to cool.

DON’T FORGET the elderly, the children and your pets! Heat kills!

Be sure to use sunscreen! If you must tan, use a natural tanner. I kid you not, if just a FEW YEARS your skin will be wrinkly and tough as leather. You may have spotty skin, or skin that just tans in a few places. Even worse, I know someone who has had skin cancer over most of his visible body and had to have it cut out – even on the face.

SERIOUSLY – no matter how fabulous you THINK you look, getting older is hard enough.
Don’t ruin your skin! Also, if a product says “waterproof” don’t believe it. You need to lather on sunscreen often on hot days you are out in the sun for the day.

You only have ONE body to live in and one face. Check it out! Don’t be STUPID and pay money to look older and die younger. No matter what anybody else says, you are the one residing in your body. CARE FOR IT!

Also remember to hydrate often in the summer. The heat causes more deaths than any other single cause of death. This is a fact often not brought to our attention.
Thrive and stay alive with a fine meld of wisdom and emotion. Don’t buy into the thought that exterior “beauty” is the most important thing. When you start getting older you will see what a lie that is, and if you are damaging yourself when you are younger….
well, all choices are yours to make!
